Romantic accommodation in the heart of the Yarra Valley, Victoria
The Yarra Valley's history only dates back to 1837, meaning it is just 173 years old, and has certainly had its fair share of flash flooding and devastating fires during this time! Below we have outlined some of these details and we hope that you find it as interesting as we do. Did you know that all vineyards in the Yarra Valley had been turned into farmland due to the depression in the 1930s and did not return to a florishing winery countryside until the 1960's!

Timeline for the Yarra Valley:

The Yarra Valley has a fascinating history starting in the 1800's

1837
The district was first settled in 1837 by the Ryrie brothers, who grazed cattle on the rich Yarra River flats at what is still known today as Chateau Yering.
1838
The first ever Yarra Valley vineyard was Yering Station, planted in 1838
1850
Gulf Station, one of the Yarra Valley’s oldest farms, was settled in the 1850s and was a supplier of meat to gold miners.
1862
Hubert de Castella founded St Huberts in 1862. He came to the colony of Victoria in 1854 at the invitation of his younger brother Paul, (who had bought Yering Station)
1859
Upstream from where Healesville is situated gold was found at New Chum Creek in about 1859
1865
The first land sale at Healesville was in 1865,and in the following year there were thirty business premises, including six hotels and a primary school. Healesville was also selected as a site for "neglected black and half-caste children and an asylum for in firm blacks." Thus the Coranderrk reserve on Badger Creek, south of Healesville, was created in 1865.
1888
The area "came of age" in 1888 when the railway line to Yarra Flats was completed and local business began to gravitate towards the railhead, nearer the river.
1920
In the 1920s the Association published "Healesville, The World-famed Tourist Resort", listing over 40 beauty spots and 20 hotels and guest houses.
1927
The construction of the Maroondah Dam in 1927, replacing the weir, brought several hundred workmen to Healesville. Their departure, and the onset of the 1930s depression exposed Healesville's restricted range of industries.
1934

1937

Of particular note in the Yarra Glen's history is the flood of 1934. Following torrential rains from 29 November, together with a king tide which obstructed the flow of the Yarra River into Port Phillip Bay, a record inundation level on 1 December saw floodwaters reach the site of the current Yarra Glen post office in Bell Street.

With the depression in the 1930s the Yarra Valley was hit hard and by 1937 every vineyard in the region had turned into farming land. It’s period as a wine-growing region was temporarily forgotten.

1939
Tradgedy struck on Black Friday in the Yarra Valley Tragedy struck on Black Friday, the 13th of January 1939 when a firestorm swept across Victoria......71 people died
1960
The wineries made their comeback in the 1960s and, since then, have won international awards and made the Yarra Valley a favourite Victorian tourist destination.
1968
Fergusson Winery Planted in 1968 with classic French grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
1987
De Bortoli Wines: The property was purchased by the De Bortoli family in 1987
1987
In 1987, Domaine Chandon planted its first vines in the picturesque Yarra Valley.
1990
Allinda Winery was planted in 1990
2009
Saturday 7 February 2009 tragedy struck again with Black Saturday. 173 people died as a result of the fires and 414 were injured. This was Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bush fire. Tragedy struck again in the Yarra Valley on Black Saturday
2010
The Yarra Valley is now flourishing with new growth. Homes and businesses are slowly being rebuit and a new sense of life is coming back to the Yarra Valley.
